I. Which is available for viewing as a video on www.amatteroffactandfiction.com.

II. He apparently came to everyone else’s attention a few years later when his story was featured on an episode of House, which I’ve never watched but have been told is rather good.

III. Or, for that matter, ethical. I can just imagine the letter of consent that you would have to write to a patient’s family: “Hi, we noticed your grandmother is nearly dead. Would you mind if, on the day we think she is going to kick the bucket, we put her in an experiment to see if our cat can correctly predict that she is actually dying?”

IV. I.e., there were only 28 false positives out of 400. Not too shabby, really.

V. I did say gory.

VI. Although it does have a fish with red fins, golden eyes, and an amiable personality who befriends the Cinderella character and ultimately gets eaten by the wicked stepmother.

VII. There is a good reason why birds would be excellent guides at Avernus, in southern Italy. More on that later when we discuss the dark oracle who took up shop at that site.

VIII. Avian Biology 115. Quite a cool class. I got to handle eagles and great horned owls for course credit. I don’t remember too much from the course, since I haven’t handled a raptor in over twenty years, but I do recall two critical things. First, great horned owls have such strong talons that they crush your hand even when you’re wearing a raptorproof glove. Second, you have to wear a fencing mask when handling eagles.

IX. For all of you ornithology pedants out there, yes, I am aware of the more western branch of the Palaearctic route for raptors coming from areas such as France, Norway, and the Netherlands that goes through Spain and leaps over Gibraltar into Morocco. It just isn’t relevant to making bird prophecies in ancient Greece.

X. Kind of like arriving at a party late and noticing that all the nibbles and champagne are gone, but ten times worse.
